Samsung Jet S8000 smarter than a smartphone review
Media playback is not a letdown either as Samsung Jet supports a variety of audio and video codecs like DivX, XviD, MPEG4, 3GP, MP3, WMA, WMV, AAC, AAC+, SMAF, WAV and H.263 . Playing a full DivX video doesn’t need any conversion like you have to did with the LG Arena. But keep in mind that you only get 2GB of build in memory and a full movie usually cost almost half of that at 700MB. However, you can upgrade your phone memory with microSD slot with up to 16GB. For music lovers, 3.55mm headphone jack is just situated on top of the phone which means you can use any of your favourite headphone for better sound clarity.
As far as connections goes, this phone is well equipped with Wi-Fi, EDGE, 3G, HSPDA 3.6Mbps and Bluetooth 2.1. Watching YouTube over Wi-Fi is not an issue like the one with LG Arena. Browsing webpage using the Dolphin browser is pretty standard with problems you get over a mobile phone trying to surf a full html page. My all time mobile browser is still remain with Opera Mini. It can be installed on the Samsung Jet but don’t expect to run in full resolution as Opera Mini doesn’t support 720p resolution yet.
Performance wise, this phone is bundled with a 1,100mAh battery. Technically, it can last up to 400hours (almost 16days) of standby time and 8hours of talk time. In real life usage, with single charge, the phone just last up to 2 days with some light internet browsing and YouTube over Wi-Fi, less than 20minutes call and a lot of SMS. I would be happier if Samsung bundled with a 1,500mAh power source instead which can extend the battery life for another day.
The build quality is a letdown. At the price of RM1,770@USD505 (cheapest I found in Sungei Wang Plaza) which falls on mid-high end phone, and in the same range as LG Arena, I expect to be build with metallic and aluminum casing. The plastic build feels cheap and very prone to finger prints. If you don’t mind of the cheap build quality, this phone is one of the better choice in this category of mid-high end phone. Other alternative would be the Samsung Omnia first generation and LG Arena, both comes with aluminum build but loses out in terms of usability and performance.
This phone deserves a 4.5/5 rating and I’m going to get one for myself soon.

Easy to use cellphone on 30 Jul 2009 at 10:55 am #
It looks pretty cool and I like the efficient use of space with menus on the side and bottom. I must say this looks like a pretty good iphone competitor.

“Capturing video can be done at a maximum resolution of 720×480 at 30FPS in MP4 format. It’s decent enough as this is the 720p HD format.”
720×480 is not 720p HD it’s 480p.

This phone looks great. I plan to take it, but my concern is divx codec. Does it support all divx files? I had bad experience with divx codecs on previous phones, since I had to convert files.

Hi there.(:
I heard that Jet doesn’t have instant messaging, what does it really mean? :O
& is the battery life weak ? How long will it last on normal usage.. ? Like, how long will one bar last? (There are 5 bars right?)
Ohyea, can we add more widgets to the widget bar ?
Sorry to bother.
Much thanks if you’d answer my questions.

sry for this late reply. Ya, Jet doesn’t have build in instant messaging application. Which kinda disappointed since many phones have it since few years back, reminds me of my sony ericsson w550i
.
as for battery life. from my opinion, is better than average. i get mine to last for 3.5days with sms(10-15sms per day), not more than 15mins call per day, updating weather forecast through wifi, emails and some mp3.
widget yes, u can add more, but keep in mind there is a limit of the allocated memory for that, which is also the memory for installed games and downloads(internet). kinda letdown actually as this memory space is not configurable and it’s kinda small.

I bought this phone, it is poor! If you put in a word that isn’t in the dictionary (which is a common word) it becomes the first word. The touch screen is absolute rubbish and decides to stop working if you over work it. My one throws tantrums if its cold outside or too hot. The only good thing about it is the wi-fi, oh and the music song finder. Save your money and buy something better!!

Well, thats why u see http://www.techmostwanted.com/phones/android-os-on-your-samsung-jet/ is badly needed by Jet users
I agree with your comments, the OS is total crap but it comes with above average hardware specs and thats why again, u need android to full utilize the hardware capabilities.
