Mobile technology trends for 2011
Just a note, the nvidia Tegra 2 is not the only high end SoC going to be available this year. And I mean spanning from the month of January to December of 2011.
- -Samsung Orion SoC; Dual Core ARM Cortex-A9 1GHz CPU + ARM Mali 400 GPU
- -ST Ericsson U8500 SoC; Dual Core ARM Cortex-A9 1.2GHz CPU + ARM Mali 400 GPU
- -Texas Instruments OMAP4 SoC; Dual Core ARM Cortex-A9 (speed unknown) + SGX540 GPU
Comparing among SoCs’ specs, Tegra 2 might fall short in terms of graphics performance and CPU since some of the SoC boasting 1.2GHz of CPU speed. But what is more important is the adoption rate. Seeing how impressive nvidia Tegra 2 marketing is and with almost all the Android gadgets demo-ed in the recent 2011 CES were based on the nvidia Tegra 2, it is save to say nvidia Tegra 2 will win the SoC-of-choice among phone manufacturers for 2011.
To support my statement, Honeycomb tablets, the Android tablets based on the next version of Android 3.0 which designed specifically for tablets in mind uses nvidia Tegra 2 as the reference hardware. So theoritically, Android 3.0 will run best on Tegra 2 with all the hardware optimizations and compatibilities being tested inside Google lab.
And here are some of the upcoming tablets and phones with “nvidia Tegra 2 inside” (end of Pentium era eh?) as follow:
-
-Motorola Xoom; Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet
-
-Motorola Atris; arguably the most anticipated phone as of now. 4inch 960×540 resolution, Tegra 2, 1GB RAM, fingerprint unlock, “webtop” where you can boot a Linux OS by docking on a netbook(consist of just a 11.6inch screen) from the phone itself!
-
-Motrola Droid X2
-
-LG Optimus 2X; available in Korean Kamagra Gold market since the 4th week of January.
-
-Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and Samsung Galaxy S 2; rumoured to be using nvidia Tegra 2 based on leaked presentation slides.
This is the first part of “Mobile technology trends for 2011″ which explained what to be expected for your graphics, smoothness, number crunching or maybe “Wow-factor” needs on your mobile. The next part I will talk about some enhancements on the software and hardware which might revolutionize our mobile technology further. In the mean time, stay tune for the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2011 for more Tegra 2 (which I expect will dominate the show again) in just a few weeks time.
